This weekend we drove two hours to Long Lake Campground (in the northern unit of Kettle Morraine State Forest). Thomas picked Megan up from work Friday at 5 PM and we stopped at Jimmy John's for sandwiches for dinner in Beaver Dam. We arrived at the park when it was still light. As soon as we got out of the car at our campsite a swarm of moquitos came so we had to put on all of our clothes even thought it was hot. There was a very noisy kid biking with loud plastic training wheels that scrapped on the road. The loop where we were camping was small so you could never stop hearing him biking the loop. We went for a walk to Long Lake. There were still people swimming despite the warnings about swimmer's itch. We got pretty hot walking with all of our clothes on. We enjoyed some Honker's Ale when we returned to the campsite, and the kid was still doing loops (with a bike light because it was dark).
The next morning we got up at 8 (kind of early) because there was a chance of rain in the afternoon so we wanted to avoid that. The kid was back out with his loud training wheels. When I was walking to the bathroom I overheard a lady saying that after the kid had gone around the loop the 135th time last night she had told him to loose the training wheels. So I guess everyone in the 900 loop had had enough. Luckily we were out of there around 10 AM. The roads close to the state forest were nice but once we left that area there were just stinky farms. We did pass a cheese factory and retail shop in the middle of no where (Gibbsville), and despite being in the middle of no where it seemed like a popular place. Tons of people were driving up and coming out with big bags of cheese. The prices looked good. Unfortunately we already had a big brick of cheese with chives from Babcock Dairy so all we got there was an ice cream for Thomas.
We arrived at Kohler-Andrae state park at 2 PM and got the last non electric site available. The site was pretty hidden and the sites behind it were closed (I think they were new) so we didn't have too many annoying or loud neighbors. We went on a hike to Lake Michigan and walked in the water, got some ice cream at the concessions, and stopped at the nature center which had a collection of butterflies and other dead animals. Thomas had his moth with him this entire time and he was happy to see that the male moth species that he had been trying to attract was available in the park. Then we did a dunes cordwalk hike, which we really liked. It was like a boardwalk in the dunes and you could see Lake Michigan. Then it started to rain around 5 PM and we found a shelter to sit in while we waited for it to stop.
For dinner we had ramen noodles and teriyaki rice, and amaretto with pepsi or sierra mist (Misty is what Thomas called Megan's drink!). Megan was pretty dead from the alcohol so we went to bed at 7 PM, and heard some rain storms. In the bathroom they had the weather broadcast over speakers (which you could not hear over the hand dryer). The next morning we woke up to a dry, sunny morning but the wind was raging! We left around 10 AM and biked straight into the wind. We went about 4 mp h because this wind was strong. We took a short cut back, along a road that was marked blue instead of green on our bike map, but we didn't find the traffic to be much worse on the blue road and there was a big shoulder. There was not much traffic on any of these back roads. We arrived at the car at 3 PM and then went to eat at the Hamburger Haus. Megan had seen this place when we were driving in Friday and thought it looked like fun. There were crowds of people and a long line so I think it was the local place to go. Thomas had a double hamburger and a chocolate shake and Megan had a cheeseburger, fries, and a chocolate shake. It was sooo good! Megan usually doesn't love hamburgers so she is not sure if it was the hard biking against the wind and up hills, or just that this place has the best burgers, or a little of both.
Thomas's female Promethea Moth did not end up getting a male in the end, despite our spreading its pheromones 300 miles across Wisconsin. We biked 58.7 miles total, 8.2 mph average, and were on our bikes for 7 hours and 8 minutes. Thomas's bike computer reached 1500 miles (Megan bought him the computer for his birthday two years ago)!
